What is the TikTok safe zone?
The TikTok safe zone is what the app leaves clear on your ad. On a 9:16 in-feed ad, TikTok covers 12.8% at the top and 37.4% at the bottom, and crops about 11% of the width off screen. TikTok publishes no figures, only template files, so we measured these off its own overlay in Ads Manager on 19 August 2026.
Drop your ad in above and the tool draws exactly that on your own file, in your browser.
TikTok safe zone vs Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat
TikTok covers 37.4% at the bottom, more than Instagram Reels at 34.6% and Snapchat at 35.3%. Only Facebook Reels covers more, at 40.4%. Other checkers set the safe zone TikTok uses to 35%, by analogy with Meta, which puts text inside a band TikTok’s own tool marks as covered. TikTok is also the only one that crops your width.
| Placement | Top | Bottom | Each side |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok In-feed, 9:16 | 12.8% | 37.4% | About 5.5% cropped off screen |
| Instagram Reels | 15.3% | 34.6% | 6.2% |
| Facebook Reels | 13.8% | 40.4% | 6.1% |
| Snapchat | 10.3% | 35.3% | 6.4% |
As a percentage of your ad, measured in each platform’s own Ads Manager.
Why TikTok crops 11% of your width
Phones are taller than 9:16, about 9:18, so TikTok scales a 9:16 ad up to fill the height. About 11% of your width then sits off the screen, roughly 5.5% off each side. That strip is removed, not covered, which is why the tool draws it red rather than amber. Keep text and logos well in from both edges.
Is a square ad safer on TikTok?
No, it is unsafe in a different place. TikTok reserves part of the screen, not part of your file, so a 1:1 ad gets a free top. It then loses 27% at the bottom and about 3% on each side, and the action buttons cover about 28% of the width on the right from 30% down.
Drop a 1:1 into the TikTok placement and the tool flags the wrong shape. For TikTok, export 9:16.
TikTok safe zone template
Our TikTok safe zone template is a 1080x1920 PNG with the 12.8% top band, the 37.4% bottom band and the side crop drawn in. Put it on the top layer in Figma, Photoshop or Canva, design around it, and hide it before you export. The figures are percentages, so it scales to any 9:16 file.

TikTok safe zone questions
Does TikTok publish safe zone sizes?
No. TikTok offers template files, in left to right and Arabic right to left versions, but no numbers. We measured the figures on this page off TikTok’s own overlay in Ads Manager, using a ruled 1080x1920 test file, so they match what Ads Manager draws over your ad.
Why does my text look cut off on TikTok?
The caption and buttons cover the bottom 37.4%, and TikTok crops about 5.5% off each side to fill the phone. Text low on the frame or close to the left and right edges goes first. Keep headlines between 12.8% from the top and 37.4% from the bottom, well in from both sides.
Can one export clear TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat?
Yes. Keep text 16% from the top, 41% from the bottom and 7% from each side. Those are the deepest bands we measured, rounded up: 15.3% top on Instagram Reels, 40.4% bottom on Facebook Reels and 6.4% sides on Snapchat. They also clear TikTok’s 12.8% top, 37.4% bottom and 5.5% side crop.
Is there a safe zone in TikTok search results?
No overlay applies there. In search results the ad is a card in a 2 column grid, not full screen. The creative is letterboxed inside a portrait card, with an Ad badge bottom left and a sound icon bottom right over it, and the caption sits below the card. Keep text clear of both bottom corners.
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser, so your creative never leaves the machine you are sitting at. There is no account, no upload, no size limit and nothing is stored. That matters if you are holding an unreleased campaign under an NDA.
