What is the Facebook safe zone?
The Facebook safe zone is the part of your ad the app’s interface leaves clear. Meta publishes 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% each side for Reels, and 14% top and 20% bottom for Stories video. Its own guardrail in Ads Manager draws something else. We measured it on 19 August 2026: Reels 13.8 / 40.4 / 6.1, Stories 14.1 / 13.6 / 0.
Feed has no published figure. Drop your ad in above and the tool shows both readings on your own file, in your browser.
| Placement | Meta publishes | Meta’s own tool draws |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Reels | 14 / 35 / 6 | 13.8 / 40.4 / 6.1 |
| Facebook Stories | 14 / 20 video, 14 / 35 / 6 image | 14.1 / 13.6 / 0 |
| Facebook Feed | No figure | No preview exists |

Facebook Reels safe zone: 40.4% at the bottom
On Facebook Reels, Meta’s own tool covers 40.4% at the bottom, where Meta’s documentation says 35%. Follow the published figure and your text sits inside a band Meta’s tool marks as covered. Design the Facebook Reels safe zone to 14% at the top, 41% at the bottom and 6.1% on each side.
40.4% is close to the 40% Meta asks for on Reels ads with a disclaimer. Either Facebook Reels now keeps that depth by default, or the 2 are the same band.
Facebook story safe zone: 13.6% at the bottom
On Facebook Stories, Meta’s own tool covers 14.1% at the top and 13.6% at the bottom, with no side margin. That is shallower than both published figures, 20% on the Stories video page and 35% on the image page. Clear the published numbers and you clear the tool, so Stories is the easiest Facebook placement to design for.
Is Facebook Reels the same as Instagram Reels?
No. Measured in the same Ads Manager, Instagram Reels covers 34.6% at the bottom and Facebook Reels covers 40.4%. Meta publishes 35% for both. The top and sides are close: 15.3% and 6.2% on Instagram, 13.8% and 6.1% on Facebook. One file running in both needs to clear the deeper bottom, so keep text above the bottom 41%.
Facebook safe zone templates
We made 2 Facebook safe zone templates, for Reels and for Stories. Each is a 1080x1920 PNG with the bands we measured drawn in. Put it on the top layer in Figma, Photoshop or Canva, design around it, and hide it before you export. Both are 9:16, so they scale to the 1440x2560 Meta recommends.

Facebook safe zone questions
Why do Meta’s pixel numbers not match my file?
Meta’s Facebook Stories video page says 14% is 250 pixels and 20% is 340 pixels. 14% of the 1440x2560 Meta recommends is 358 pixels, so the pixel counts and the percentages were written against different canvases. Work in percentages and the problem goes away. Every figure on this page is a percentage.
Does Facebook Feed have a safe zone?
Meta publishes no Feed figure. It warns that the call to action can cover Feed creative, then gives no size, and Ads Manager offers no Feed guardrail preview. Export a square for Feed: a 1:1 loses nothing to the call to action row, where a 4:5 does. Since March 2026, Facebook Feed also includes the Friends tab.
What size should a Facebook Reels or Stories ad be?
9:16. Every Meta Stories and Reels page recommends 1440x2560, and 1080x1920 runs too. Facebook Stories video runs from 1 second to 3 minutes, up to 4GB, and Stories images go up to 30MB. Every figure on this page is a percentage, so it holds at either size.
Is the safe zone inside or outside the yellow overlay?
Outside. Meta’s help page says the safe zone is the area inside the yellow overlay, but in Ads Manager the yellow sits on the profile row, the Shop now button and the margins. The yellow marks what gets covered. Meta’s wording from 25 July 2025, “outside of the yellow area”, was the correct one.
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser, so your creative never leaves the machine you are sitting at. There is no account, no upload, no size limit and nothing is stored. That matters if you are holding an unreleased campaign under an NDA.
